Steps to Freedom
Johnny Coleman

Lecture by Johnny Coleman

In response to the process of engaging upon a religious-or-spiritually guided journey, I would like to direct the focus of my presentation upon the object of the exercise… where am I going? And why? For the past fifteen years, I have worked and lived in Oberlin, Ohio: a landscape that is sometimes referred to as “the last stop on the Underground Railroad”. This place, Oberlin, has been and continues to be a destination for many people from all over the world… this has been true for many reasons. In the context of African Americans, Oberlin, because of its history, has signified a specific and recurrent theme: freedom. I’d like to focus upon my own internal aspiration/struggle to achieve “freedom”… and the impact of this struggle upon the work that I produce.
