Becket and Pilgrimage Badges: Sarah Blick, Art Historian, Kenyon College
Sarah Blick

Medieval Art Speaker’s Series: Unraveling some of the mystery, four highly regarded art history scholars illuminate details from the medieval period through this fascinating lecture series.

Sarah Blick is an Associate Professor at Kenyon College who specializes in the study of pilgrim’s badges. Much like modern-day pilgrims to Graceland visitors to various sites of pilgrimage throughout Europe purchased these small souvenirs during the Middle Ages. The badges came in a variety of sizes and were made of materials as base as lead or as opulent as silver or gold in order to best serve the desires and budgets of the pilgrims who purchased them. Dr. Blick’s talk will focus on the badges produced to commemorate Thomas Becket, a controversial and fascinating figure who lived in England in the Twelfth Century.
