The University of Akron is ideally located in America's midwest, near the Great Lakes. With a population of 225,000, Akron is Ohio's fifth-largest city. For the second time in recent years, Akron has been named an All-American City by the National Civic League.

The campus is within easy driving distance to many of the country's finest art museum s and cultural venues. Akron is less than 50 minutes from Cleveland, 2 horus from Columbus, and 2 hours from Pittsburgh. The University is close to two major airports, including Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport, and within an hour of major U.S. cities, including Washington, Chicago and New York.

Nearby cultural resources include the world-renowned Cleveland Museum of Art, The Akron Art Museum, Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, many galleries, the Cleveland Orchestra, Blossom Music Center, Cleveland Ballet, Ohio Ballet, Stan Hywet, the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame & Museum and Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland, the Carnegie and Scaife museums in Pittsburgh, and the Wexner Center in Columbus.

Facilities

Seventy thousand square feet of student-centered learning space, all on ground level, and all on one site—that is Folk Hall, the home of the Myers School of Art and the Emily Davis Art Gallery.

Well-equiped studios are devoted to ceramics, commercial photography, computer imaging, drawing, illustration, metalsmithing, painting, photography, sculpture, two-dimensional design, and three-dimensional design.

State-of-the-art equipment and technology is available throughout Folk Hall. Five existing computer labs, plus two new computer labs for graphic design and computer imaging, enable students to explore new areas of creative research and ensure that their professional skills are on the cutting edge.

The Emily Davis Gallery showcases cutting-edge art and design of regional, national and international significance.

University Art Galleries

The Myers School of Art's galleries provide and environment of encouragement and inspiration for students, faculty, and the community.

The University Art Galleries present challenging contemporary exhibitions and events that showcase the most current expressions and critical thinking evolving in the visual arts today. The objective of the University Art Galleries is to serve students, faculty and the community by creating the most saturated environment possible for encouragement and inspiration.

The gallery facilities are extensive. They include the nationally known Emily Davis Gallery and the projects and Atrium galleries in Folk Hall, as well as exhibition space at Bierce Library and the Guzetta Hall Atrium, and temporary spaces throughout he campus and the community.

Nationally know, the Emily Davis Gallery originates regional and national traveling exhibitions, and hosts the Myers School of Art's student, juried student, and scholarship exhibitions. Recently, the Gallery and Myers School of Art hosted the Scholastic Art Awards' annual regional competition, which draws more than 3,500 entries from middle and high school students from throughout the area.

Alumni

Alumni of the Myers School of Art are prepared to achieve their best as visual artists. And they do, in ways that are exceptional and far-reaching.

The Success of alumni is a distinct mark of excellence for any art school, and the Myers School of Art has proudly seen its graduates receive impressive honors.

For example, two graduates have won prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships. Many graduates have had their work exhibited by renowned galleries and museums across the country and abroad, and many have received notable awards.

Although the Myers School of Art is exclusively and undergraduate program alumni have been accepted into the finest graduate schools in the country.

Graduation and placement rates are exceptional. Alumni are enjoying a career success throughout the visual arts fields.

The individualized support that is a hallmark of the Myers School of ARt continues after graduation. Graduates are encourages to network with faculty and fellow students. In addition, the University's Placement Office remains available for assistance with career planning, placement, testing, resume writing and interviewing skills.

Student Life

A worthwhile college experience is more than classrooms, books and exams.At the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art, students engage in new and vibrant experiences that enrich life and expand opportunities.

Practica: Outstanding museums and galleries – including the Cleveland Center for Contemporary art and The Akron Art Museum – are among the sites where students have been invited to exhibit their work. Such off-campus exhibitions provide real-world experience, valuable network contacts, and a wide range of other benefits for emerging artists.

One of the most recent and exciting practica projects was Creative Communities and ambitious collaboration by the Myers School of Art and The Akron Art Museum. A select group of talented students worked with community adults and children to create art that represented what the residents' neighborhoods meant to them. The resulting exhibition garnered tremendous reviews and helped to celebrate the museum's 75th anniversary

Student Art League: A very active organization, the Student Art League enjoys high visibility on campus and in the community. For example, it has participated in Akron's popular First Night, a New Year's Even celebration that draws thousands of people to downtown venues for an array of artistic activities. Several members of the Student Art League have created innovative installations for First Night that showcase the tremendous talent of the School's student body.

Design x Nine: Design x nine, one of seven well-equiped design studios in Folk Hall, enables outstanding seniors to work with real clients, printers, service bureaus and others in the field. The studio earned its name from the nine outstanding seniors chosen for it each year. The students hone their design skills, business savvy, technical knowledge, teamwork abilities and the other talents they need to success in the graphic design industry.

Co-Op Program and Internships: Graphic design students are encouraged to participate in co-op programs and internships, although the experience can be beneficial for any student. The resulting advantages are many: money to help pay for college, credits toward a degree, and work experience to prepare for a career. In recent years, students have participated in co-op and internship programs at such sites as Disney World, the Central Intelligence Agency, the New York Stock Exchange, and area ad agencies and design studios .

Faculty

In addition to being talented teachers who care about students, full-time faculty in the Myers School of Art are regionally and nationally renowned artists.

Talented Faculty Artists: Faculty members are invited to participate in exhibitions throughout the world; they exhibit works in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions each year. Many faculty members are regularly commissioned to create public art, book illustrations, commercial photography, digital imaging and other works.

Small classes and faculty mentoring: An average teacher-to-student ration of 10-to-1 helps to ensure individualized attention. In addition, each student receives guidance from a faculty mentor of his or her own choosing. The faculty mentor helps with portfolios, exhibitions, internships, and the many other aspects of an enriching education experience.

Stellar artists-in-residence and visiting artists: Stellar visiting artists frequently share their creativity and expertise with students and faculty during residencies at the Myers School of Art. In addition, two outstanding lecture series bring renowned leaders in the arts to Folk Hall. One of those lecture series and the School of Art are named for Mary Schiller Myers, an alumna who is well known and highly regarded throughout the art world as an advocate and patroness of the arts.
