The Myers School of Art STUDIO Scholarship Competition DUE

This competition is open to all DECLARED BA and BFA art majors who are currently enrolled in at least 6 credits of 7100 art studio and/or art history. Applicants must have completed at least 3 credits of art studio/art history during fall 2007 at the Myers School of Art to apply. Art minors and graduate students are not eligible. Applicants must need to take at least 12 more credits to get their degree.

Q: Is it true that I need straight As to get an award? A: No, you need a 2.78 (B-) overall and a 3.3 (B+) in your art courses

Q: This application doesn’t say anything about art history A: There is a separate application for the art history award, available in the art office

Q: Are graphic design majors eligible?
A: Yes, graphic design majors are art majors (BFA in Graphic Design)

Q: Are art education majors eligible? A: Yes, art education undergraduate majors are art majors (BA in Art Education)

Q: I am eligible if I receive other funding? A: Yes, although Financial Aid may subtract our award from any other that you receive

Q: Can a freshman really hope to win anything? A: Sure. We judge lower level students separately from advanced ones. Last year a freshman won our highest award. Anyway, it’s good experience for subsequent years.

Q: Why must I thank my donor? Q: It’s good manners, and it encourages the donor to continue to give.

Q: I have a few pieces already framed. Do I need to remove the frames? A: No

Q: Should my name be on all the work? A: It’s up to you whether or not you want to include your name. It can be on the work, on a wall tag, etc.

Q: What if I have a piece that’s too large for the space (or some other special need)? A: Talk to the gallery staff to see if they can accommodate you.

Q: Is 3 dimensional work eligible? A: Of course

Q. Can I be a few minutes late handing in my application? A: In fairness to all, no.

Q: Why is there a grade minimum? A: This is a scholarship show. The goal is to reward excellence.

Q: Why are graduate students ineligible (art ed or arts administration)? A: Because our donors gave this money to the Myers School of Art for our art majors. Grad students are in other colleges such as education. Q: If I miss the deadline or find that I am ineligible, are other art funds available this year? A: No. We take all of our available funds and award them through our scholarship competition (or to incoming freshmen). Hopefully you’ll be eligible next year.

Q: What if I only miss one of the grade minimums by a few points?
A: The grade minimums are not flexible. If we tweek it a few points for you and a few more for the next person, we must accept all applications which we cannot do.

Q: Why do so few students apply? A: It is traditional to have less than 10% of our majors apply. Recently it has been about 5%. Some do not have grades or forget the deadline. Some do not have the confidence. Many say they did not hear about it or do not read our emails.

Q: Why is there money given in some specific areas (such as the American Greetings award in graphic design) and not others? A: This is determined by the donor.

Q: If I am not awarded art funding or not eligible for art funding, am I still eligible for financial aid from the University? A: Our art funds have nothing to do with Student Financial Aid. You can apply for Financial Aid as well.

Q: Must everything be matted? A: No, but standards of good presentation should apply.

Q: How do I display 3D work? A: You may want to build a shelf or platform. See the gallery staff if you’d like to use a pedestal.

Q: I know I can only show 20 pieces, but what about a series (say of prints?) A: A series counts as one piece.
