Dr. Rudy’s talk will focus on the ways in which some fourteenth century manuscripts functioned for the nuns who read and used them.
Kathryn Rudy is Curator of Manuscripts at the Royal Library at The Hague and an expert on medieval manuscripts. Dr. Rudy’s talk will focus on the ways in which some fourteenth century manuscripts functioned for the nuns who read and used them. While living securely in monastic complexes these women were able to use these texts to imagine themselves traveling to some of the holiest spots in Christendom. These imagined voyages were thought to be as efficacious for their spiritual salvation as actual travel and the texts discussed by Dr. Rudy served as how-to guides for the best ways to perform these virtual voyages.
