Dressed for the Labyrinth: French Column-Figure Sculpture 1140-1170

Janet Snyder, an associate professor of art history from West Virginia University, will speak about the meaning of the remarkable column figures that stand beside the entrances to Gothic Portals in France. These figures develop in the Twelfth century in Paris and they spread rapidly throughout France. Focusing her attention on the cathedral at Chartres, Dr. Snyder will discuss several aspects of these figures including their dress, which is quite exotic, and the political ramifications of their presence on these entrances.
