EJ THOMAS HALL STAGE, THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Join us for a night of pure visual hedonism, kicking off with lively dialogue on the intersections of art and science, followed by a campus-wide party with the latest in house music spun live on the EJ Thomas Hall stage.
The night begins at 7pm through the Stage Door at EJ Thomas, where artist Marius Watz and UA biologist Francisco Moore engage in a discussion on the topic of “animated life in real and virtual worlds”. Marius Watz, Europe’s leading generative artist, creates self-replicating visual and melodic installations, while Dr. Moore’s research studying evolutionary patterns in living systems, uses computer simulations to duplicate genetic processes. Both artist and scientist find common ground through the use of artificial intelligence in their work. This engaging dialogue will be moderated by Myers School of Art professor Matthew Kolodziej.
After the dialogue the party then starts at 8pm when EJ is transformed into a European dance club – becoming one of the hottest venues for live audio and visual art in Northeastern Ohio. We are teaming up with the Myers School of Art, Apple Campus Reps, and DJ PI(it) to bring you some of the best live house dance music from the clubs of Chicago, New York, and Germany. See EJ’s dramatic spaces, both inside and outside, come alive with Watz’s large-scale projections. Watz uses generative visual forms to create amazing organic shapes with a maximalist attitude.
Enjoy refreshments and a cash bar… and don't forget to give your eyes a rest! The entire evening is free! Presented by The University of Akron’s Mary Schiller Myers School of Art and E.J. Thomas Hall.
The Maruis Watz exhibition, residency, dialogue and opening kick-off party is the culmination of a year long project conceived and organized by graphic design students Nate and Kirk Mueller, and faculty advisor Matthew Kolodziej.
