ABOUT THE SCHOOL
Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Myers School of Art is to provide a high quality education and leadership in the fine arts, art history, design, and art education. We seek to provide excellence in teaching, research, and community service, contributing to the visual culture of the region.

Goals and Objectives for Accomplishing the Above Mission:

A. To support the objectives of The University of Akron and the College of Fine and Applied Arts as stated in the General Bulletin.

B. To sustain a learning environment and an approach to teaching which can help each student realize his or her creative and intellectual potential in the visual arts by:

1. Developing critical and conceptual thinking and the ability to articulate at an early stage in the curriculum;

2. Providing individualized instruction;

3. Developing proficiency with tools, materials, and techniques;

4. On-going review of the curriculum;

5. Providing equipment and facilities necessary for delivering the curriculum;

6. Providing a strong visiting artist and gallery program;

7. Making the experience of exhibiting art an integral part of the students education;

8. Making available internships, coops, field experiences, and other opportunities for students;

9. Awareness of health and safety practices in the studio;

10. Providing a faculty with appropriate background and experience to meet the need of the curriculum.

C. To encourage and reward continuing growth of faculty members as artists, scholars, and teachers by:

1. Treating professional practice as an integral component of faculty evaluation processes;

2. Basing retention, promotion, tenure decisions on quality of teaching, research, and service;

3. Supporting faculty professional work and development through such means as leaves, grants, and release time.

D. To provide expertise of the faculty and the creative and intellectual resources of the Myers School of Art to benefit of the broader university and regional communities by:

1. Sponsoring exhibition and lecture programs that are open to, and of interest to community members as well as faculty and students;

2. Contributing to the cultural and economic growth of the region by serving as lecturers, jurors, consultants and volunteers to professional and community organizations and other educational institutions;

3. Working jointly with other academic departments or community organizations in developing programming of appropriate types.
