Biography

Janice Troutman has 25 years of experience as a Graphic Designer. She has taught for the Myers School of Art at The University of Akron since l989. For the past 15 years she has coordinated the Graphic Design Department.

Along with teaching, Janice freelances design projects. Her work exhibits strong concepts, good color sense, as well as a sensitivity to typography. A partial client list includes: Downtown Akron Partnership, The American Lung Association, BFGoodrich, Millcraft Paper Company, Berea’s Children’s Home and Family Services, ACE Fellows Program and Picker International.

Janice founded and is currently co-creative director for design x nine, which is the student design studio within the Myers School of Art. Now in the 11th year, the studio has clients from both on and off campus. These include: The Akron Round Table, Biddies Bakery, The University of Akron School Dance, Music, Theatre and Arts Management, The Emily Davis Gallery, The Akron Art Museum and Cascade Lock Park Association.

Her expertise working on complex projects as well as the work accomplished by the student studio design x nine has has received over 50 professional awards in local to international competitions. Some of the awards include: The Drench Award, The Addy Award, American Corporate Identity, Creativity and The Admissions Advertising Award.

Previous to teaching at the university level, she was an art director in a full service advertising agency where her clients included General Electric, American Greetings, Evenflo and Children's Hospital.

Other interest are bookmaking, letterpress printing and collaborative projects across disciplines such as ceramic tile, printmaking and photography. She been very successful at combining the computer with hand crafted solutions resulting in unexpected and clever solutions.

Janice is active in the design community; a member of American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), University and College Designers Association (UCDA), and a past board member for the Advertising Federation of Greater Akron (AFGA).
