The metals program at the Myers School of Art combines art theory, craft history, contemporary issues and personal influences with the many techniques used in the metals studio. Students refine their skills as they study and create utilitarian objects, non-functional objects, jewelry and metal sculpture.
The metals studio in Folk Hall is superbly equipped. Students create works with ferrous and nonferrous metals using these and many other tools: a full anodizing system, individual soldering stations, and a large assortment of raising and forming stakes and hammers. Students also have access to an electroformer, centrifuge and vacuum for casting, enameling kilns, a polishing area, sandblaster and die former.
Core/foundations courses in drawing, two dimensional design, three dimensional design, and life drawing.
Major courses: a minimum of 7 courses in metalsmithing.
Other requirements: art history, art studio electives, machined tools course, review process.
General education courses: English, social science, natural science, humanities, cultural diversity, physical education, math, speech.
